Public safety training support

Sometimes we don’t realize how much effort goes into keeping us safe. Law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency responders need regular, high-quality training to maintain top-notch service. Sourcewell offers a variety of programs — all free or discounted for members in the five-county service area — to better prepare emergency workers with new techniques and technology.

Sourcewell reimburses participating agencies in central Minnesota for completed training approved by the Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board (EMSRB). Approved trainings include initial and refresher courses on CPR/AED, Basic First Aid, EMR, and EMT.

    Reimbursement rates:

    • $3,000/entity/year for law enforcement, city ambulance, and first response teams

    • $1,000/entity/year for dispatchers, social workers, public health, public works, highway departments, and nonprofits that have fewer than 20 FTE employees and provide direct services to clients that are victims of crime or children

Sourcewell partners with Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education (MBFTE) to fund local firefighter training. The partnership pool reimburses local fire departments for classes/instructors on the MBFTE-approved class list. Each entity is entitled to a per firefighter rate, and can access funds by completing the reimbursement form at mbfte.org.

To help reduce losses related to police liability, eligible central Minnesota members receive free access to the PATROL (Peace officer Accredited TRaining OnLine) portal. The tool is made available through the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust (LMCIT).

For more information, visit the LMC PATROL website.

Access local training facilities at no cost. Through a partnership with the MN Highway Safety Research Center, public agencies can access these facilities for departmental training.

Sourcewell covers 100% of the facility fee for eligible central Minnesota agencies.

Sourcewell partners with the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association to cover registration costs for regional sheriff's offices to access ICLD. This online learning system offers a comprehensive introduction to leadership, ethics, character, supervision, communication, and self-development. There are 40 different POST certified courses, for nearly 200 hours of training.
